That’s right, the Building Code of Australia (BCA) will soon be available online for all and for free! If you have ever spoken to me about the yearly BCA editions and access to the BCA by payment only you will know my thoughts as a private certifier. It has never sat right with me that registered builders or owner builders are expected to comply with a legal document which isn’t freely available.


This leads to guessing and ultimately buildings that are constructed in a way that is not optimal. I’m sure there are a lot of people building out there who given the choice would build in accordance with the BCA – if they only knew what was needed to do.


The Australian Building Code Board who publish the BCA have released an instalment on building reform article on their webpage outlining the details of the change.


They say… “The decision to eliminate costs associated with purchasing the code will allow it to become more accessible to both small business and the building and plumbing industries encouraging them to remain well-informed of current changes. The forum also agreed to move from a one-year amendment cycle to a three-year amendment cycle which will deliver more certainty and stability about regulatory change to the building and construction industry.”
