Building Surveyor work varies all day every day. One type of construction that has seen a recent surge in numbers is the good old granny flat (or Fonzie flats for those located above a garage). In the eyes of the building code (BCA) a granny flat is assessed by a building surveyor as a residential dwelling needing the same care, attention and technical details that would be provided for your typical house – giving the state an additional safe, affordable and energy efficient building that’s easy on the eye.


With recent changes to WA planning laws allowing home owners to rent out granny flats, now is the time to build your own nest egg. If you have a rental property you could potentially double the rental income by building a granny flat and renting it out separately. The Planning Ministry John Day has recently been quoted as saying that he is estimating that as many as 30,000 granny flats could be constructed over the next 10 years.
